The basic objective of the Shops & Establishments Directorate under the Department of Labour, Govt. of West Bengal, is to implement the West Bengal Shops & Establishments Act, 1963 along with the Rules framed there under in the notified areas of the State of West Bengal. The Act has provisions for compulsory registration of all Shops & Establishments, issuance of appointment letters to the employees, regular payment of wages to the employees along with statutory leave, holidays, and specific working hours, prescribed opening and closing hours of the Shops & Establishments, and recovery of unpaid or illegally deducted wages. There exists a well defined machinery for the administration of the West Bengal Shops & Establishments Act, 1963, in the State of West Bengal. It is composed of a hierarchy of inspecting personnel, headed by One Chief Inspector, followed by One Additional Chief Inspector, One Joint Chief Inspector, One Deputy Chief Inspector, Thirteen Supervising Inspector and Seventy One Inspectors. This machinery remains alert regarding the observance of various provisions of the Act on the part of the shopkeepers and employers.
